The whale was found on Cupsogue Beach County Park in Westhampton Beach, the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society in Hampton Bays announced on Sunday, May 5.

AMCS Media Coordinator Rachel Bosworth said the organization was working with park officials to obtain the heavy equipment needed to secure the animal and pull it out of the surf by late afternoon Monday.

AMCS will begin its examination of the whale on the beach Tuesday morning.

Comments, many with emojis on the group's Facebook page range from "Thank goodness for you guys. This is really sad" and "Very sad."

This is the year's first large whale stranded in New York, according to the AMCS.
